The name 'Treasure Coast' dates from the 1960s. Vero Beach Press Journal publisher John J. Schumann Jr. and editor Harry Schultz promoted it after treasure hunters recovered gold and silver from a 1715 Spanish fleet wreck. It covers Indian River and St. Lucie counties, with Martin County later included.

These are the Census Bureau's July 1, 2025 estimates for the three counties in the Treasure Coast, with the April 1, 2020 Census count in parentheses:

Port St. Lucie is the largest city in the three counties, with an estimate of 268,062 (204,851 in the 2020 Census). It was incorporated in 1961 by General Development Corporation as a planned retirement community.

What homes in the Treasure Coast are up against

Florida neighborhood street covered in standing floodwater after heavy rain

Between the Atlantic, the Indian River Lagoon and the St. Lucie River, water is never far away on the Treasure Coast. Hurricanes have brought storm surge, and heavy rain alone has flooded neighborhoods: in early October 2020, more than 12 inches fell on parts of Martin County in two days, and some homeowners saw water seep in through foundations.

Questions people ask

What should I do first?

If it's safe, shut off the water at the main valve and turn off power to wet areas. Move valuables out of the water and take photos of the damage.

How long does drying take?

It depends on how much got wet and what it's made of. Your provider measures moisture and can tell you how long their equipment needs to run.

Will insurance cover it?

It depends on your policy and the cause. Sudden leaks are often treated differently from flooding or slow leaks. Check with your insurer and report the claim promptly.

Who will come to my home?
